SIBU: The technical education transformation in Sarawak must be carried out firmly and with commitment, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said here.
This was to allow for focus on training the people to achieve greater technical competency and in carrying out technical research, he said at an Aidilfitri gathering last night organised by the Muslim community here led by Nangka state assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee.
Taib said the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), the state’s regional development area, was about greater industrialisation and it was imperative for Sarawak to be able to produce enough people equipped with technical expertise and skills at all levels.
“We have succeeded in attracting billions of ringgit in foreign heavy industry investment. There are signs more (investors) are moving in from neighbouring countries like Thailand, and so we must be able to stand up to the occasion,” he said.
He said elected representatives and those in the corporate sector could play a major role in getting rural youths in particular to take up technical studies and training. –Bernama
