Primary students need highly skilled teachers

IS getting 5A’s or 7A’s in the UPSR examination the ultimate focus of primary schools? Is caning the ultimate option?

Handling young children in primary school needs highly skilled teachers.

It may seem to be a trivial matter but the six years of primary education experience moulds a child’s perception towards education, schooling, teachers, as well as instilling the fun of learning in children.

The role of teachers in a child’s education is to create a caring environment in the classroom.

Teachers who listen to what the students have to say and develop a learning environment that is meaningful to the children have the most successful students.

Teachers with a concern for the needs of the students and a student-oriented philosophy have co-operative students who look forward to learning which leads to excellent results.

But that is not the case in SJKT Ladang Emerald in Klang. Students are bogged down with a lot of homework which is not marked by the teacher.

Students are instructed to call at midnight to report about the completion of their homework. Students are also caned for not getting the targeted results.

In my opinion, a good teacher always encourages and motivates his/her students. They guide the weak ones and motivate the good ones.

A good school environment has to be the ultimate objective of a good school leader (headmaster) who leads the teachers along the correct path.

I am very disappointed and hope that stern measures will be taken to curb these unhealthy measures practised by the school.

Quality much to be desired

OUR family returned to Malaysia last year after being overseas for a few years.

My children were lucky to start their education in the international school environment when they started their schooling.

When we returned to Malaysia, I wanted to find a school that could provide quality education where my child could build his Bahasa Malaysia foundation from scratch.

It seemed that only the private schools would be able to provide this.

I started scouting for a private school at the beginning of the year and there were a few that had started phasing out the Malaysian syllabus (KBSR) and replacing it with the Cambridge syllabus and termed themselves as “International School”.

I wasn’t too pleased with the facilities and the teaching quality since I could make a comparison with the real international school experience.

What’s more, every local international school will claim to have the best teaching quality and hence the world-class fees that they would be charging.

Most parents in the Klang Valley of average income are paying these fees, hoping their children will receive the best education.

But how much insight do we have about the teachers’ background and their teaching quality.

With so many so called international schools mushrooming, good teachers are being “pinched” with higher salaries offered. How are the schools to maintain or attract good quality teachers in such a situation?

I’m willing to pay if I can be guaranteed my child will be getting the best education and care from the teachers. But from the enquiries and feedback after talking to other parents, it doesn’t seem likely.

How often does the school upgrade the teaching facilities, teaching materials and provide a good resource centre?

When my child is able to cope with his Bahasa, I plan to transfer him back to a public school. Didn’t we all come from public school once upon a time?

Raih emas pertandingan inovasi antarabangsa

Pelajar MRSM Alor Gajah bersama guru pengiring meraikan kejayaan menerima pingat emas dalam Pertandingan Pencipta Muda Antarabangsa Kelapan 2012 di Bangkok, Thailand baru-baru ini.

PENYERTAAN sulung Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Alor Gajah dalam pertandingan antarabangsa berjaya meraih pingat emas untuk memartabatkan inovasi generasi muda Malaysia dalam bidang sains dan teknologi.

Guru maktab itu, Mohamad Rizal Mukhtar berkata, dua projek penyelidikan iaituD.I.Y. Fire Retardant Paint dan Recyling Tyre berjaya meyakinkan juri mengenai ciptaan, inovasi serta reka cipta untuk dianugerahkan pingat emas di Pertandingan 8th International Exhibition for Young Inventors (IEYI) 2012 di Bangkok, Thailand baru-baru ini.

“Berkat kesungguhan dan kreativiti, juri dari pelbagai negara termasuk pensyarah berpengalaman dari Jepun berasa kagum dengan penyelidikan serta persembahan pelajar kami,” katanya dalam satu kenyataan baru-baru ini.

Pasukan MRSM Alor Gajah diwakili oleh Mohd Hafizuddin Ya’akop, Nuraziidah Amirruddin, Abdul Aiman Akmal Rahmat dan Noraza Hanafiah yang dibahagikan kepada dua pasukan.

Pertandingan selama empat hari itu melibatkan 206 produk rekaan serta ciptaan terkini oleh pelajar-pelajar muda dari pelbagai negara seperti Jepun, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Filipina, Vietnam, Indonesia dan Singapura.

Menurut Mohamad Rizal, kumpulan pelajar muda kreatif dan inovatif itu menghasilkan projek berkenaan dalam tempoh setahun atau dua semester sebagai projek kajian minat mereka atau Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM).

“”Pelajar telah dilatih dengan menyertai pelbagai pertandingan peringkat dalaman iaitu di maktab sendiri, kemudian ke pertandingan Tunas Saintis peringkat MRSM, seterusnya menyertai pertandingan di Universiti Putra Malaysia dan Universiti Malaysia Perlis,” jelasnya.
