KUALA TERENGGANU: School counsellors can be the frontliners to curb the spread of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) phenomenon among students, said Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.
To do so, he said, the counselors should have adequate knowledge and understand the LGBT symptoms in order to advise students involved.
Handling the issues should not rest solely in the hands of schools but also the Parent-Teacher’s Association, he said after opening a parental seminar on tackling LGBT issues at the state stadium here yesterday.
He said affected students should meet counsellors once every three to five weeks.
Through counselling, he said students would be advised on what is right and wrong, especially on issues with regard to exposure on the internet.
“Perhaps teachers can advise on the good and ugly sides of the internet in schools,” Puad added.
